Google Earth
To begin with, you can use Google earth to Zoom in and out of a 3D world with a tap of the screen – or search by place name and go straight to a location. As with all these applications, you can download it from the iTunes Store.

Music composer Brian Eno made this odd synthesizer programme that uses tunes from you tapping the screen. Coolr stuff, which eats up your battery. It’s only£2.39.

A Lord Of The Rings fantasy meets block puzzling. Like Tetris in pants. Possibly the best handheld game ever made, now just £5.99.
Midomi
Play a song to the free-to-download Midomi and it identifies what it is – even if it’s you humming it.
Spore Origins
Unfortunately you don’t get to build a space faring civilization in the £3.99 iPhone version of this evolution sim – you’re a piece of plankton instead. Still, adding tentacles and eyes as you swim around is relaxing and fun.
